I don’t want to get technical ever, because someone somewhere will try to argue about cameras, flashes lights and the universe. I’m just sticking to natural light. Cameras were invented to record an image - in natural light. They didn’t have daylight balanced anything in those days! Just a silver coated plate if I remember right.
At the moment I use an old digital camera that would be considered ‘out of the ark’ when compared to the latest whizzies. I know it’s ok because my work is in brochures, catalogues etc. I still hanker for using a roll of film though, and I find it really sad that economics and ‘progress’ forced me to store my lovely old OLYMPUS kits. Aaaaahh!
With daylight and nightlight you can produce some wonderful pictures unmatched by anything produced in a regular studio. Each picture will be different because light is constantly changing, and you can please most people with a portrait in a natural setting using natural light.
Hey! Why not dump the flash and go natural?
In case you’re wondering why I’ve put no pictureson these pages, just think about how you would be viewing them on your screen. Not a very natural light behind those pixels is it?
Should you want to see some naturally lit pictures on screen, have a look at public sites at NASA showing pictures of our universe.
If you want to see stunning images using natural light, go outdoors and look around. Take notice of shadow / contrast, see how it can change in just a few seconds. Look up to the sky, it may appear hazy because of a mist or thin cloud that will diffuse the harshness of natural light. Then see an image in that naturally lit setting, if you like what you see record it in your memory. Just like a camera does. Who needs a camera when you have eyes that focus and a memory to store?
Finally, if you want to learn how to use a camera to record a scene, leave the camera alone and learn to view a satisfying scene in natural light with your eyes only.
